Epic Ultra University is an online education platform founded by Eric Steele for ultrarunners, race directors, crews, pacers, and others who help make the sport work.
Ultrarunning has always taught person to person.
Long before online courses existed, ultrarunning knowledge moved through conversations at aid stations, race briefings, club newsletters, old magazines, course markings, shared mistakes, pacing decisions, volunteer tables, finish lines, and long drives home.
That grassroots knowledge is one of the sport’s strengths — but it is also easy to lose. Epic Ultra University exists to organize practical experience without stripping away the context, humility, experimentation, and community that created it.
Lessons should survive contact with reality.
Material should be informed by people who have actually run, directed, crewed, paced, volunteered, organized, solved problems, and lived inside the sport.
Repeatability matters.
Good education turns experience into usable frameworks, checklists, decision processes, operating systems, and tools without pretending every race or runner is identical.
Preserve what the community already knows.
Veterans, volunteers, race directors, crews, pacers, runners, writers, historians, and local communities all hold pieces of ultrarunning knowledge worth preserving.
Eric Steele
Eric Steele entered ultrarunning in 1994 and became involved in the sport as an athlete, race director, organizer, writer, community builder, and event founder. He founded the Kansas Ultrarunners Society in 1995 and later founded Epic Ultras.
His background outside ultrarunning includes decades of database marketing, operations, leadership, entrepreneurship, public speaking, training, and systems-oriented business work. Epic Ultra University brings those strands together around a simple question: how do we make hard-earned ultrarunning knowledge more useful without turning the sport into generic theory?
Education is one branch of a larger endurance ecosystem.
Epic Ultras is the broader endurance media, storytelling, education, history, and community platform founded by Eric Steele. Epic Ultra University is its dedicated educational property.
The university can support educational content that originates from runner experience, race-direction knowledge, interviews, history, operational lessons, community contributors, and other Epic Ultras projects.
Build the curriculum deliberately.
The current stage is infrastructure and curriculum development. Future tracks may address ultrarunners, emerging race directors, experienced race directors, crews, pacers, volunteers, and other participants in the endurance ecosystem.
